	I am an artist and PhD candidate.&#38;nbsp; My current practice questions what constitutes the ‘photographic’
within emerging digital ecologies, specifically; how do technologies that
enable three-dimensional imaging, the socially-networked image, and computational
photography affect the processing, practicing, and archiving of individual,
social and cultural memory.
My work attempts to


explore the boundaries
of what constitutes the photographic by disrupting indexical links between
photographic representation and memory.&#38;nbsp; I
 extract different types of raw ‘image’ data, before it is reconfigured into
a format that we might recognise as a ‘photograph’, and then explore and interpret
it using hardware/software to create alternative visual topographies that can allow
for spatial exploration.&#38;nbsp; I am interested
in how this sits within histories of photography, such as the ‘phantasmagorical’[1] in early
photography that employed illusion techniques and created images that were
‘virtual’; a 
history of photography that from its
inception has explored the unreliability of perception.


My current practice draws on
recent research within the field of digital memory studies[2] which attempts to map the digital
remaking of memory that is taking place within digital media archaeology through
concepts of time-critical media, microtemporality and the process of temporal folding
and layering engendered by digital technology[3].&#38;nbsp; This presents non-linear, fragmented, and instantaneous time as features of
contemporary networked and mobile images. &#38;nbsp;

I’m interested in the ‘undecidability’[4] that is characteristic of the algorithmic turn
in photography, the move away from traditional forms of tangible materiality (e.g. the family album) to the fluidity of the digital form.

	Flow State


A site-specific installation exhibited for No Bounds Festival, 2024, that combined video projection, soundscapes, 3D imaging, and data captured from networks of tunnels and hidden stretches of river running underneath the city of Sheffield. &#38;nbsp;


The work responded to the tensions between infrastructures designed to ‘contain’
nature and the human need for sensory connection, relating to the river

through the mess and interplay between technology, environment, and feeling. &#38;nbsp;

	Water and Soil


These works were brought together to explore affective connections between place, memory and the photographic act. The camera image data was captured on visits to the river Thames and Derbyshire woodlands, and then processed using movement within the 3d space of the image to reveal alternate views of the image structure and composition.


Revisiting the spatial qualities of images in this way and untethering the camera’s perspective of the landscape, is used as a method for reflecting on the memory of the lived experience, the construction of the photographic frame and the active nature of digital image spaces.

	Volatile Surface Images #3: Soft Bodies


The term Soft Body in computer graphic physics engines refers to a simulated&#38;nbsp;body that can be deformed by interactions with other bodies or forces [within the physics of a digital environment]. Taking my own body as subject, this iteration of the Volatile Surface Images series uses volumetric image capture as a photographic technique to playfully explore how&#38;nbsp;human bodies interact with 

physical and digital bodies or forces.

	Volatile Surface Images #2: Landscapes

The Volatile Surface Images series is concerned with the push and pull between the photographic image and digital data visualisation, between legibiity and abstraction, between three-dimensional volume and two-dimensional surface.&#38;nbsp; The images are created ‘in camera’ and post production is limited to reframing/cropping and colour balancing.
 These sets of images examine how landscape as subject is affected by being held between these different image states.&#38;nbsp; The exhibition view images use a vertical flat screen TV and framed screen displaying a live augmented reality camera view to enable bodily interaction between the space and image.

This photography, AR and projection work was the result of a visual research laboratory and exhibition to initiate dialogue around what constitutes the ‘photographic’ within emerging digital ecologies and the implications of this for the way we interact with photography as a medium for memory.

The exhibition comprised of 3D photographic scans that were created in everyday situations using a very quick handheld scanning technique that results in digital fragments or ruins. These are placed in augmented reality within the exhibition space and visible via a framed, handheld screen, alongside hanging 2D projection.Audience members were invited to explore these ‘3D snapshots’ by physically moving around the space whilst holding the screen.

The participatory nature of the exhibition introduced a performative element whereby the audience becomes embodied within hybrid digital/physical space. The bodily interaction of participants with the digital, sculptural fragments brought into focus the intimacy of the interaction with the digital bodies and led in some case to disorientation between the digital and the physical.
